I don't know enough about the 50's to know which newspapers backed McCarthy or not. He did have a lot of sway for a long time with only a brave types like Murrow standing up to him.

But it was a different era in terms of communications technology. With only a few outlets, if you had control of the platform you could get away with a lot. The public was accustomed to following leaders after the Depression and the war.

Today there is so much diversity and dissent that the would-be authoritarians can preach an ethic of control, but their actual ability will get weaker and weaker in the next few years.

I expect them to end up as a shrill clique pushed to the side in Washington by 2009.
