CDMA in India....another update. I might have posted some of this stuff before. My head starts to swim after I read too many articles.

-MTNL has been authorised to go ahead and offer the 10000 CDMA lines they have built-out. The GSM operators had been protesting the low rates that MTNL was offering (somewhere around a penny a minute)....but they got the go ahead.

-MTNL seems to have committed to at least another 50000 lines by sometime next year (i've seen March but I question this) and a total of 150000 over the next 3 years.

-They are also going to launch a GSM network sometime next year....havent seen estimates as to the capacity.

-The cell-phones sold may have been Samsung's....I read about a sale of 411's to MTNL.

-The most important thing that i have read is that the build-out of all cellular services is TINY. I read an estimate that there are currently 1.2m total cellular subs in India today. If this is true then GSM doesnt have a head start and all bets are off....growth in India would provide a nice cussion against saturation in other countries (notably Korea).

Bruce...You said you saw a lot of phones....were they cell phones? It seems unlikely since 1.2m represents only .1%. Of course it always depends on what areas of the country you were visiting.
