Liberals feel they always have to demonize their political opponents. Liberals always all their opponents "fascists". Its a kneejerk reaction, no thought behind it.

This is absolutely true. The term "fascist" has been tossed around for years by liberals without their really understanding what fascism is or how it has evolved, as we witnessed on this thread this week.

I suppose it stems from the tie-in with nationalism. But nationalism isn't exclusively rightest, and fascism, historically had many leftest elements. It is probably a misunderstanding of the subject to conclude that fascism is exclusively "rightest" or exclusively "leftist", as it has elements of both. But a conservative certainly isn't fascist by virtue of his conservatism, and that's the way the term has so often been used by liberals.
