The facts are that the Anbar Awakening could never have occurred with the surge. While it began, to a very limited extent before the surge, it was the surge that made it possible. Without the surge, there would have been no Anbar Awakening, and vice-versa.
This is a point that everyone who is aware of what is happening in Iraq agrees on. The only people who really disagree with it are the left-wing attack dog blogs, most of which had no idea what the Anbar Awakening was until they heard about it in the news.
McCain's position that the troop surge made the Anbar Awakening happen, made it possible, is precisely correct. And to the extent there could have been no Anbar Awakening had the surge not occurred, I think his characterization of it is reasonable.
The overwhelming point here is that the Left will not give Bush, McCain, or any other Republican the slightest credit for what they DO get right. You bash them when they're wrong, and bash them even harder when they're right.
