I'm aware of the tragedy of the commons, but on this issue we differ. I would fight pretty hard to keep the national forests and parks under government management. That management would guard against the tragedy of the commons.

People like Ted Turner scarf up huge areas for their exclusive use and they become unavailable to the public. Almost all the hot springs plunges that I know of that were privately held and managed for public use were bought up by rock stars and others with more money than they can use, and now everybody else can't enjoy them. The only ones available to the public now are those in wilderness or near wilderness, with one exception that I know of--Lolo Hot Springs in Montana--that Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery used going both directions.

The Bureau of Land Management is one federal agency whose original mission was to dispose of federal lands under its control. Some of those lands, principally reverted railroad lands, are surrounded or bordered by national forest. That portion should be transferred to the national forest and the rest could be sold off to private interests according to the original mandate of the agency.
