I had an acquaintance in the CIA, monitoring developments in the Soviet Union. His main job was to read Soviet publications, and to take note of any useful data or interpretations Sovietologists might have to supplement his own work in using open sources. Later, this would be coordinated with material from clandestine sources, such as human agents, defectors, and signal intelligence. Meanwhile, it was considered a good way of monitoring developments if read with care.......
