Loughner’s Fixaton on Giffords Goes Back to 2007

John on January 9, 2011 at 1:44 pm

Dave Weigel has the court filing which indicates Loughner had fixated on Giffords, possibly as early as 2007:

Some of the evidence seized from that located included a letter in a safe, addressed to “Mr. Jared Loughney” at 7741 N. Soledad Avenue, from Congresswoman Giffords, on Congressional stationary, dated August 30, 2007, thanking him for attending a “Congress on your Corner” event at the Foothills Mall in Tuscon. Also recovered in the safe was an envelope with handwriting on the envelope stating “I planned ahead,” and “My assassination,” and the name “Giffords,” along with what appears to be Loughner’s signature.

Loughner’s former friend Caitie Parker remembers him meeting Giffords and later told her he thought Giffords was “stupid.” It’s possible that the letter from 2007 only later developed into an assassination plan, but at the very least there is now solid reason to believe Loughner had an unhealthy fixation on Giffords since well before anyone outside of Alaska had heard of Sarah Palin and about 18 months before the existence of the Tea Party. His reasons were probably his own.
