Brooks, I believe they do do this, at least for the accounts they generate directly, although maybe not for those or most of those they get through banks. They generate ach debits intended to charge bank accounts on the same day the payment is intended to arrive/be posted. In this case is is not unusual to find that the payment cannot be collected, in which case they need to get the money back from the payee, or collect from the payor. The "magic" in the system is the ability to know who has NSF'd previously, and then use checks drawn on the customer account instead of paying using their funds. Also, they can identify large payments and use checks when the system forsees too much risk. I think!
