No Wires Needed Advances High-Speed Wireless Networking with ARM Powered Solutions

BusinessWire, Wednesday, February 16, 2000 at 02:03

BILTHOVEN, The Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 15, 2000--
ARM(R) Core-Based Processors to Power a New Generation of
High-Speed Wireless Products Compliant to IEEE 802.11,
Supporting Wireless Connections Up to 60 Mbps
No Wires Needed has announced a collaboration with ARM (LSE:ARM)(NASDAQ:ARMHY) to
enable a new generation of high-speed wireless networking products based on the ARM architecture.
Products resulting from this collaboration include IEEE 802.11-compliant wireless networking
products that will support data, voice and multimedia.
"We develop standards-based platforms that enable high speed wireless connectivity," said
Hans van der Hoek, president and CEO of No Wires Needed. "Together with ARM, we have developed
a medium access control (MAC) chip that is ideal for controlling the 2.4 GHz radios that currently
support an 11 Mbps data rate. This MAC solution improves the overall performance and reliability of
wireless LAN solutions and is capable of supporting 5 GHz radios planned to offer data rates of 54
Mbps and more."
No Wires Needed products, like many of the world's wireless access products, will contain a
custom-designed application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) with an ARM core-based processor.
The on-board processor is capable of handling data speeds as high as 60 Mbps. This innovation will
also benefit the growing market of Internet Appliances.
"ARM's presence in the networking segment continues to increase, with a rapidly growing
number of design wins in applications including Ethernet adapters, switches, hubs, routers, ATM
chipsets, remote access concentrators and analog and digital modems," said David Rose, Business
Development manager, ARM. "ARM has established itself as the architecture of choice for wireless
voice communications applications, and this agreement with No Wires Needed will further strengthen
ARM's position in the emerging market for high-speed wireless networking products."
No Wires Needed Wireless Networking Products
Corporate mobile workers and SOHO computer users utilize No Wires Needed's wireless
solutions to gain high speed Internet access. The company was the first industry vendor on the
market with a secure, wireless LAN product suite compliant with the 11 Mbps IEEE 802.11 HR (high
rate) standard. No Wires Needed's transparent AirLock 128-bit security architecture is the only
solution in the industry that does not require bothersome encryption key management.
ARM Core-based Processors for Networking
In today's fabrication processes, ARM core-based processors range in performance from 60
MHz (54 MIPS) to 175 MHz (200 MIPS), extending to 300 MHz (400+ MIPS) for processor cores
currently in development. ARM cores are noted for performance, small die size, low power
consumption, tight code density, and multiple supply sources. Instruction set compatibility between
processor families promotes design reuse and reduces software development time. ARM offers a
complete solution, including processor cores, peripheral intellectual property (IP), development tools,
applications software, EDA tools and design services. The architecture is well supported by
international semiconductor partners, leading real-time operating systems providers, third-party tool
chain developers, application software providers, and ARM design centers.
