They were probably stimulus association tests. Y'know, blue lever good, red lever bad. When the cat(s) choose to associate a certain color with the good lever - we mark that down as a wise choice based on color vision. Of course, a moment's thought reveals that the outcome depends greatly on the cat's cooperation. So the only thing we really can take home from all that work is that the folks in labcoats didn't know jack about cats.
