A few books to recommend, all historical fiction which can bring an era to life in ways that straight history
often does not:

Two by Jean-Christophe Rufin:

The Abyssinian, set in 1699

and the sequel: The Siege of Isfahan, set in the same region 20 years later

also, Guernica, by Dave Boling, his first novel and very moving and impressive.
Set in the Spanish Civil war, Guernica was the town which inspired Picasso's famous painting

I'd rank Guernica with any of Hemingway's work, liked it better in some ways.
