As you point out, tourism is an important (most important, I bet) part of the economy (for good reason, I think.) Did you know that San Juan was not much a cruise ship destination until about 10 years ago? As I recall, I was visiting not long after the "new and improved" ship facilities opened and we went down to take a look.

Of course, the Caymans have a tiny population. Most of the Caribbean islands measure their population in hundreds and thousands, but Puerto Rico has millions (and about half of them are living stateside at any given time). Hawaii's population is probably about that of San Juan (just a wild guess on my part).

Yes, I've been to Arecibo. The rain forest is neat, too.

BTW, did you notice a lot of houses that looked unfinished? They were. Once they have the money, the second floor gets built. In some areas, when the owner gets more money, a third floor is built and the first floor becomes a garage or carport and storage area. That way, when the occasional hurricane comes to town, the residents and their possessions are usually safe from the flooding. (At least that is how it was explained to me many moons ago, on my first visit.) Even the "unfinished" houses in so-so districts cost a hell of a lot more money than something like that would in California.
