Bin Laden planning huge terror attack, says Interpol chief Nov 8 2002

The chief of Interpol believes Osama bin Laden is still alive and that al-Qaida is planning a large-scale terrorist attack.

Ronald Noble says intelligence specialists agree such an attack would this time not only target the United States, but several countries at once.

He told French newspaper Le Figaro intensive searching had failed to locate bin Laden but there was no proof to indicate he was dead.

He said the Lyon-based Interpol has studied the financial standing of bin Laden and concluded that his fortune remains intact.

This is thought to be somewhere between £176 million and £190 million.

"Osama bin Laden is alive," said the Interpol Secretary-General.

Bin Laden keeps his money mainly in cash, spread among several countries, he added.

Mr Noble also discussed the recent attacks in Bali, Yemen and Moscow.

He said the attacks showed terrorist groups are sending a message to Western governments, that: "Your war against terrorism is far from over," he said.
