CWC SETS ITS DIGITAL DATE

Cable & Wireless Communications is to launch its digital cable services on July 1st in its Manchester franchises, followed by most of its London franchises. Commercial trials start this week in Manchester.
CWC aims to have digital available to 50% of homes passed by the end of the year although it appears that some older franchises (eg. London's East End) will not be getting service until the network is upgraded.
Starting on July 1st all new CWC customers in the Manchester area will be installed as digital subscribers and existing customers will start to be upgraded to digital. They will receive an expanded channel line-up and near video-on-demand service from Sky Box Office.
CWC claims that an equivalent phone/TV package from ONdigital or Sky (with a BT phone line) will cost 6 to 7 pounds more than with their service each month, although those figures were calculated before Sky's free settop offer was announced.

The interactive line-up will include e-mail via the TV and up to 100 interactive service sites. Banking games and full Internet access will be added at a later date. Among the organisations with plans for interactive TV services are Flextech Interactive for consumer entertainment and information, and Bloomberg TV for business information.
Other key providers include EMAP, Scoot, Sporting Life, and Live TV - all of which will be offering real-time interactivity via the TV screen. EMAP will include their bargainholidays.com website. Barclays Bank, Littlewoods and ITN have already announced their involvement.
The digital development is to cost CWC 60 million and it will create 2000 new jobs, many of them in a new customer service call centre.
