An anti-trust confirmed what I think the executives at MSFT felt about the deal with the government. It would be too costly for the company even if it meant a short term rally in the stock. I think over time, analysts would have turned against the company. I believe MSFT weighed the pros and cons of each alternative (to settle or not) and came to the conclusion that is better for the company to not.
