thanks I tried some of the links including putting the service on automatic but same result.

I get a shutdown error and a message about Dr. Watson service from Zone Alarm. I don't know what Dr. W does. I know it's some sort of service that checks for errors but it doesn't give you any instructions when it pops up.

Once I restart and reboot a couple of times, I am able to get the thing to work.

So I figure it's a conflicting setting somewhere. So, I'll leave this here in case anyone has any ideas.
