RE: Backwards Compatibility.

Rocky,

>> And where does the upcoming 40MB Vapor! drive fit in with its lack of compatibility with ANY other Iomega drive, including Zip? <<

This is kind of scary. I think I finally found something on which Rocky and I agree.

I was just about to reply to Eve and ask about the release of Jaz, and why it didn't have to be compatible with Zip. Clik is another good example.

I don't think that backward compatiblity is necessary if the application or target market is different. [And I see that Eve addressed this in a later message.] With Iomega, this can be demonstrated with:

Clik: Consumer Products
Zip: Low-End Removable Storage
Jaz: Professional High-End Storage
Ditto: Tape Backup

Inside each category, there is compatibility. Zip and ZipPlus are compatible. Jaz and Jaz2 are compatible. DittoEasy, DittoMax, and DittoMaxPro are all compatible.

The difference with SyQuest:

44/88/200/270: Low-End Computer
EZFlyer 135/230: Low-End Computer
SyJet 1.5: High-End Computer
SparQ 1.0: High-End Computer?
Quest 4.7: High-End Computer

With SyQuest, they have multiple product lines that aren't compatible. The SparQ doesn't really fit at the high end or the low end, and isn't compatible with anything else.
