<EASI> Engineered Support Receives $11.2 Million Radar System Contract From Canadian Military

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Engineered Support Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: EASI) has received a $11.2 million
contract for the upgrade of Manportable, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition
Radar (MSTAR) systems from the Canadian Department of National Defence. The
contract award also includes spare parts and associated components, according
to Michael F. Shanahan, Sr., Chairman and CEO.
The contract calls for the upgrade of 173 MSTAR systems that are
integrated into the Canadian Coyote Reconnaissance vehicle used by the
Canadian Army for critical surveillance, reconnaissance and scouting missions.
Functionally, the MSTAR aids forward-deployed troops and field artillery units
in detecting, locating and classifying moving ground personnel or vehicles and
low-flying helicopters. The MSTAR system greatly improves the distance at
which enemy targets can be acquired by fire-support artillery operations
compared to the visual identification methods currently used; and, an
additional mode detects artillery shell impacts and provides automatic
correction data for friendly artillery fire, The MSTAR is "man-portable,"
meaning it can either be transported by two soldiers or mounted on a vehicle
as a stand-alone system such as will be done with these Canadian units.
Shanahan commented, "This technology is essential to provide the Coyote
vehicle with a radar system enabling its crew to conduct a fall range of
mission critical duties. Products such as the MSTAR readily illustrate the
market demand for sophisticated military electronics by U.S. allies around the
globe that Engineered Support Systems can provide. We believe the MSTAR
program in particular offers significant opportunity for continued
international market success."
In addition to Canada, over the past few years, Engineered Support has
supplied MSTAR systems to the U.S. Army National Guard and to various foreign
military customers including Poland, Australia and Colombia.
Production work will occur at the Company's Systems & Electronics
subsidiary in St. Louis with deliveries occurring from mid-2003 through mid-
2004.
Engineered Support Systems, Inc. is a diversified supplier of high-tech,
integrated military electronics, support equipment and logistics services for
0 branches of America's armed forces and certain foreign militaries. The
Company also serves a variety of commercial customers.
