Dell Extends Lead in Worldwide Workstation Shipments
Company Gains Market Share in the United States and Western Europe

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 2001--Dell (Nasdaq:DELL - news) expanded its leadership position for workstation unit shipments worldwide in the first quarter of 2001, according to estimates by a leading industry analyst firm(1).

Dell was the only vendor that grew worldwide units and revenue both annually and sequentially, with dramatic market share gain in Western Europe(2), adding more than five percentage points in a single quarter.

``Worldwide, customers recognize the value and ease of Dell's direct model and the dedicated focus of our workstation offerings,'' said Jeff Clarke, vice president and general manager, Dell Precision Workstations. ``We plan to maintain this momentum by bringing new technology to market quickly, expanding our graphics line up and focusing on emerging global markets such as Western Europe.''

According to a 2001 first-quarter analysis by IDC, the analyst firm, Dell ranked No. 1 with a 28.3 percent share of the worldwide total branded workstation market(1). Dell claimed 42.3 percent of worldwide personal workstation unit shipments, an increase of 28 percent year-over-year, while the overall total personal workstation market fell by 10 percent.

In the United States, Dell was No. 1 in shipments with 36.3 percent market share in the total branded workstation market. Dell had 54.3 percent of the U.S. branded personal workstation market, up 12 percent year-over-year.

In Western Europe, Dell held the No. 1 position with 24.5 percent share of the total branded workstation shipments(2). Dell had 35.7 percent of the Western European branded personal workstation market shipments -- adding 5.3 percentage points sequentially and 14.7 percentage points year-over-year(2).

``With aggressive pricing, a clear strategy and sound execution, Dell is increasing its shipment lead over the competition,'' Kara Yokley, IDC's workstation research analyst, said. ``Dell is successfully targeting more market segments, such as small-to-medium business, and more geographical regions, such as Western Europe.''
