Fed officials dispute the view that an asset bubble has formed, and in any case think the Fed should focus on the real economy, not asset prices. "Unless you break the economy you cannot break a stock market bubble," Mr. Greenspan recently declared.

Fed officials have acknowledged that an inflation-adjusted short-term interest rate of zero is at odds with an economy growing at 4% annual rates. At some point, the rate "will have to rise back to a more neutral state because it is inconsistent with general long-term stability," Mr. Greenspan said recently.

The Federal Reserve left its key interest rate unchanged at a 46-year low of 1% and, noting the weak job market, gave no indication is ready to raise interest rates soon.
With inflation quite low and resource use slack, the Committee believes that it can be patient in removing its policy accommodation.
