I think the odd benchmark performance of the P4 may very well be related to the clock throttling. Maybe when the hot-spot-on-the-die clock throttling takes place, the BIOS automatically reverses it after some timeout. It is totally unacceptable for a workstation to drop to 1/2 performance until the next reboot if one square millimeter of the L2 cache overheats. I wish Anand had retried some benchmarks with a better or worse cooling solution, to see if uneven performance is temperature related.
