Sorry for the delay in responding, but you'll understand why in a second. Thanks for the Symantec link. I tried a search under their support site, but must have missed this one. It's correct. I made the Outlook Express windows all smaller so I could see the desktop, created an e-mail to myself, sent it and up popped the scanning notification. It was apparently being hidden by the other OE windows... most of the time.

But then along came a major problem. The Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus 2004 Pro icon in the lower right taskbar suddenly disappeared. When I open up NAV 2004 Pro it said "Auto-Protect" and "E-Mail Scanning" were disabled. I re-enabled them, but they wouldn't stay enabled. Then, following the Symantec support site, I disabled them both, rebooted, and tried to enable them again with no luck. I tried enabling them again and rebooting... but still no luck. Using Win 2000 Pro (NTFS format) with 4 harddrives in a hardware SCSI Raid 5 array (Adaptec). Also have a number of standard programs from Microsoft Office 2000 Pro to Nero... and Zone Alarm Pro, SpyBot S & D, AdAware, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, BOCleaner (anti-trojan) and Trojan Hunter. All Microsoft patches applied for WIN 2000 and Office 2000 and all malware and spyware programs updated daily. I ran Trend Micro's online antivirus scanner and Panda's online virus scanner... plus the antispyware programs and antitrojan programs and came up with nothing. Next step was to presume Norton files had gotten corrupted so went to reinstall. Tried 6 times (first uninstalled the existing Norton AV 2004 Pro and although it showed a successful installation and I could update NAV, I still had no NAV icon in the taskbar and the NAV opening screen showed "Auto-Protect" and "E-Mail Scanning" still disabled)!! jv16 Power tools to the rescue... no, I don't own any stock in the company!! I tried the RegCleaner part first, but had the same result after trying to reinstall. Next I went to the registry cleaner components and file search components that allow "automatic" uninstalling of any reference to Symantec and/or Norton (did have to right click on three entries that had no reference and, sure enough, one was for Symantec). Even though I had used Add/Remove program to uninstall (as per manual's and website's instructions), there were still over a dozen plus entries that I found to delete. Then rebooted and reinstalled NAV AntiVirus 2004 Pro... and we have a winner!! I sat with my bottle of Nitroglycerin next to me as NAV updated to the most recent files and virus definitions and after rebooting, I was back in business. Unfortunately, the NAV support site doesn't give adequate support as I originally followed it to the "T". What it doesn't mention is that even after an uninstall and rebooting, there are still files and registry entries left which quite obviously prevented NAV from working properly... even though it said successful installation after the install was completed.

The use of jv16 Powertools was a life saver as I was ready to reformat everything and do a complete reinstall (thank God for backups so my data wasn't lost). The jv16 Powertools can be dangerous so I'm very leary about deleting something I'm not sure about even though it has a restore function, but I can't recommend it highly enough... together with the other anti-malware programs listed above.

Thanks again for your assistance. You have the patience of a Saint and must be one heck of a guy to be willing to devote some much of yourself to helping others. And the same goes for the many others on this thread who give of their knowledge and experience so readily.
