WINfirst deploys consumer iTV system in Sacramento

Canal+Technologies Inc., the North American iTV software unit of Canal+Group, and Denver-based WINfirst, a fiber-to-the-home service provider of voice, video and data services, have teamed to deploy a new iTV system in Sacramento, Calif., the companies announced today.

The new system is designed to enable WINfirst to provide its customers with a variety of iTV applications and a channel lineup of digital video, audio and programming options.

The WINfirst iTV deployment platform includes middleware and conditional access system from Canal+ Technologies, as well as content from Intertainer for VOD, TVN for pay-per-view, nCUBE for broadband streaming-media services, and Phillips for set-top boxes.

WINfirst is in the process of building a new, fiber-optic network that will allow high-speed Internet, digital cable, and local and long-distance telephone service to every residential neighborhood it serves, the companies said.

Canal Plus Group is a unit of Paris-based media giant Vivendi Universal.
