Sounds wonderful.

My version of that story starts with me having a kind of whole body arthritis for about 20 years now. After a few years I could barely walk but gradually managed to overcome it to an extent that amazes my specialists. (This was achieved by partially taking their advice and partially ignoring it, plus a lot of hard work.)

Anyway, my first try at a hike after redeveloping some strength and flexibility was the alpine meadows at Manning Park east of Vancouver, which I picked because you can head up a summit drive and start your hike already on top of a mountain. I had gone a few kilometers when two German ladies in their 50s went striding by me. This was the first of many times I have been passed by older Europeans over the years while hiking.

The weather grew threatening so I turned back. When a thunderstorm began, I sheltered under a tamarack tree -- designed by nature to repel snow and water -- down in a bowl. I was soon joined by the German ladies and we snacked and chatted while watching lightning strike below us in the valley while the thunder echoed from side to side between the peaks, one of the most amazing experiences I have had.

When the rain stopped we bid auf wiedersehn and by the time I got back to the parking lot, they were long since packed up and gone.

A few years ago I took my then 19-year-old nephew who thought he was very fit on a 20 km. round trip hike with lots of vertical up Cameron Ridge in the Cariboo. It was very tough for me but more than worth it, mostly for the 360 degree view of snow capped peaks at the top, but also because the young whippersnapper had more difficulty completing the hike than his 50-year-old uncle crippled by arthritis.

I need to get back up in the mountains. Maybe I'll head up to the Tatenshini...
