Jack, That's the $200M question! But the Max-Pain effect is a second order effect, ie it can be swamped out bu external forces like news, Greenspan, momentum waves, etc. Cramer has written about this effect and detailed some of the tactics 'the big boys' use to move the stock price up or down to suit their needs.
