Not quite a computer question, but probably somebody here has the answer.

I don't listen to music when I exercise, so have never even thought about MP3 players. But I do listen to vocal (college lectures) cassette tapes and CDs, and also to Shakespeare plays on CD.

But the tape player and CD player are awkward to take around places.

So. Can verbal matter on cassette tapes and CDs be easily converted into MP3 files and carried around on an MP3 player? And can this be done by a technophobe?

And if so, will any standard MP3 player do it, or do I need to look for some special features?

Is there any good web site that talks about this stuff?

Thanks for any advice!
