“Free Space Hot Spots - Case Study ”
This is the lead for the upcoming week assuming this conference in Shanghai proceeds as scheduled....
April 15, 2:00pm – 2:45pm Topic: “Free Space Hot Spots - Case Study ” Speaker: Mr. Liu Hong, Marketing Director, MRV Communications
Imagine a city center where people in the streets, in shops or sitting in café’s can log into the Internet from their PDA’s or notebooks through WiFi technology and have access to all the information available on the Net.
These people can access specific information about entertainment in the city, special offers from local shops, access general information on the Net and download emails form every place within the city.
This presentation includes a case study that gives insight to how Wireless Access Networks can be implemented by interconnecting WiFi Access points through a Passive Free Space Optical Fast Ethernet Backbone.
Passive Photonic Airlink (PAL) transceivers are very small and can easily be installed on lamp posts and walls in the street to provide high bandwidth access to WiFi hotspots.
The combination of the PAL based backbone and WiFi Accesspoints enable a cost effective, license free, WISP access network roll out within weeks. infoexevents.com
+++++++++++++++ Noam was pretty clear in the last conf. call Q&A that they were using the PAL for wireless backhaul. He referenced a specific application in a "European Capital". My guess is London. We soon shall see.

Unfortunately, the case study link is dead and my Slovakian is very poor but here is a loose translation>>
FiberCity is a city carrier in the process of deploying an IP based access network for providing IP broadband services to business users in metro Manila. The company is using a privately owned fiber based network, initially planned to carry Gigabit Ethernet data transmissions. Optical Access OptiSwitch™ 800R have been deployed in each of the ring nodes serving as the Access concentrators, applying advanced features such as Rate limiting, Classification and Intrusion control. At the Metro level, an OptiSwitch 2400 serves as a IP terminator, providing connectivity to the backbone and to a local application server farm, hosting a variety of IP application such as VoD, Web and Video-conferencing applications. The first installation phase involves the deployment of 3 rings totaling 30 multi tenant buildings interconnected via the OptiSwitch™ 800. The expected number of subscriber per buildings is 100 users. ++++++++ I understand that this installation also includes the very latest Optiswitch; the one with the highest port density per rack on the market, enabling up to 16 OC-192, 64 OC-48, 256 OC-12 or 128 Gigabit Ethernet ports, with full line-rate performance even under heavy network loads. The one which supports high-speed optical interfaces and delivers an aggregate forwarding rate of 384 Mpps to meet the performance requirements in the IP core, can be configured with up to 16 I/O blades per chassis and up to 32 blades per rack. =============================================================== Dutch customers of In Reach products from MRV I presume??
