"Putin refusing to leave Georgia."
Well, du-uh. We've been telling y'all he wouldn't leave. It was pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain. I can understand why you are surprised, though. You figured that with both Bush and McCain blustering and issuing hollow threats they were just going to slink quietly away...
After all, they were so sincere.
There isn't much we can do. Ok, here is the situation. Look at a map, for starters. A military solution requires we get, you know, troops and such to Georgia. Now, we can use one of our many military bases on the Black Sea...
Oh, wait. We don't have any there. Well, we can use Turkey as a staging zone...
Oh, wait. Turkey is pissed at us because of Iraq. They wouldn't let us use their bases to invade Iraq, wanna bet they won't let us use them for Georgia? Which, of course, means they are on the front lines when things get hot with Russia.
Hmm. What's left? Well, there is Hungary, Bulgaria and Ukraine who are friendly towards us. We could stage out of there, fly across the Black Sea and land in Georgia. But, airlifted troops means light forces and what do you think the Russians are going to do when we attempt to fly a large force into Georgia?
Alternatively, we can sail several fleets through the Bosporus into the Black Sea. Well, what do you think the Russian response would be if we tried that? Do you have any idea of how narrow that strait is? And Russia has fleets based on the Black Sea. And sub bases. You might want to talk to someone who is or was an officer in the Navy what they think the results would be...
The best solution would be to bite the bullet, invade Russia itself and swing down to liberate Georgia. At least that way we could use our German bases with their wealth of tanks and ground forces.
The problem, of course, is then we are running a high risk of getting those forces nuked.
Is Georgia worth a nuclear war, harris? Come on, answer the question.
Or, do you see a different solution? Inquiring minds want to know. |
