=========Florida NRA Bill Would Allow Meeting 'Force With Force'
People Who Feel Threatened Could Use Deadly Force

POSTED: 7:20 am CDT April 7, 2005

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said he intends to sign a bill that would allow people who feel threatened in public to meet force with force to defend themselves.

Opponents said the law would turn Florida into the Wild West and would legalize shootouts on the street like at the OK Corral.

The House approved the bill Tuesday. The Senate had already passed it.

The bill essentially extends a right Floridians already have in their home or car, saying that there's no need to retreat before fighting back. But in public spaces, deadly force can only be used after trying to back off.

The bill's sponsor, U.S. Rep. Dennis Baxley of Ocala, said the law will prevent someone from getting raped, some child from being abducted, some murder from happening.

Under the new law, deadly force could be used in supermarkets, at baseball games, bars and any other place people have a right to be.
