The reporter feels right at home with these people.

I went back and read the article on the red family again. I definitely don't see what you see. I don't see the report favoring either family and both emphasize stereotypes.

The picture painted of the blue family seemed more colorful than that of the red family. That could be because the author better identified with the blue family and didn't appreciate the nuance and complexity of the red family. It could also be because the blue family lives on a more colorful and complex island. Nuance and complexity are, after all, part of what distinguishes blue from red. That would be reflected in the two articles regardless of the comfort level of the reporter.
