The whole mine debate is pretty much bogus. They are cheap to manufacture, and very beneficial to deploy, therefore they will never disappear.

You can bet that if the US sets up shop in Afghanistan (a base of operations), the perimeter will be heavily mined. There is no better way to protect a perimeter, and to slow the advance of an enemy.

Uninventing weapons has never worked before (chemical weapons have not been used in large quantity since WW1 but they are still stockpiled), so I don't see why it would work wrt land mines.
