In your earlier message you said " there isn't an icon in my system tray that tells me I have a network connection"

I don't see where anyone answered that. So, in case you still need the information, try this:

Assuming you are using Win XP
Click Start/Connect to/wireless connections/properties

Then put a check mark in the box that says "Show icon in notification area when connected"
