"What do you think the ENTIRE PURPOSE of the free press was?"

To vet candidates? Not hardly.

"According to Justice Potter Stewart, the "primary purpose" of the First Amendment was to create an institution outside of government to serve as a check on the three "official" branches of government."

Precisely.

"It was fully envisioned by the FF that persons running for elected office would be carefully examined by the "printers""

This is where you start making stuff up. Expecting a "printer" in, say, a small town in NC vet a presidential candidate from, say Vermont in the 18th century doesn't even begin to make sense. All he could do is rely on what prominent politicians in his state have to say and any public writings by said candidate. Most publishers were small, a few individuals at most, and didn't have the staff to send people out to do the research you claim was their responsibility.

The founders never envisioned large corporate owned media companies. Very likely if they had the slightest inkling such was going to occur, the Constitution would have gained some extra pages to deal with the situation.
