Hewitt - The papers did not report Kerry's WMD waffle from Hardball last night, focusing instead on Kerry's attempt to revive media interest in President Bush's national guard service. All of the accounts --in the Boston Globe, Washington Times, USA Today and Los Angeles Times to name a few-- dutifully report Kerry's teeth-grinding on the national-guard-medals-Vietnam-Cheney's-deferment stone, but the impression that comes across is exactly the opposite of what Kerry must be hoping for. He's already a tired, faded candidate hoping to arrest a slide by shopping tired, faded non-controversies.

This is America. We don't watch reruns anymore, and the Guard non-story was old when it had its first rerun in winter. Kerry thinks the medals controversy and his military records controversy are about Vietnam, when in fact they are about his lack of forthrightness. Kerry is at best a dissembler, and the criticisms he has absorbed in the past few weeks are about his inability to answer even simple questions with direct answers.

The exchange with Chris Matthews on WMD was a classic example of Kerry's reflexive retreat to ambiguity and dependent clauses. His staff must have warned him about this, but he cannot stop layering on exceptions and conditions and asides and parentheticals.
