Speculators keep prices smooth. Smoother than they would be without, IMO. The biggest artificial movers of prices are Governments. Who promptly blame "speculators" when things up or down due their actions. The sharp changes in currency in the Far East a few years ago were caused by Govs who tried to blame it on them.
