OT: "But, hate the odd size dimensions." LOL! That's what drove me finally to making my own for contemporary paintings I buy without frames.
I bought a Stousland oil on canvas, and a very similar water color he did along the same lines... both are oval-shaped paintings with nothing in the background of the rectangular canvas or WC paper... took the WC version to one of the usual suspect frame places and they really botched it... had them redo it, and redo it... they never got it right, so I contacted the artist and asked him for advice... he told me how and I ended up making a simple frame, but perfectly matted for the WC version and a nice cherry frame for the oil version... very nice result...
Now if I could ony figure out what to do with an 8-ft.X 8ft. piece that has a companion side piece (4'x 3') meant to hang so that it touches the upper left side of the 8x8... have it hanging without frame right now -- really dominates the front entrance as you enter our house... really nice, everyone comments... maybe no frame for that one.
Have all of the 18th & 19th century works/frames in the family room and dining room -- many from Czech/central europe, artists unkown or unheard of... nice pieces with killer frames...
The contemporary stuff (Stousland father and son, Harpers husband and wife, Vasarely, etc.) is in the living room... also have a very small Moore sculpture and bought some sketches Calder made prior to making a mobile -- Calder and Elder Stousland were friends and contemporaries and papa Stousland helped Calder out by buying a mid-sized mobile for $800 in the 30s... sold/donated it to a local university just before his death because his kids decided they couldn't afford the insurance on it and didn't want to inherit...
And finally, inherited a nice small collection of 18th, 19th and 20th century Japanese art (paintings, prints, tapestry, even a couple photos) all in the halls leading to bedrooms.
