I would hypothesize that if you drew a Venn diagram, one of those things with circles, and put circles for four categories:

1. People who believe hand-guns should be banned and/or regulated;

2. People who believe that law-abiding private-citizens should be able to own hand-guns with minimal or no regulation;

3. People who trust the government to protect them;

4. People who don't trust the government to protect them;

Circles 1 and 3 would be pretty close overlaps, and circles 2 and 4 would be pretty close overlaps.
