Its elitism to think that their decisions about these things are irrational "clinging" and is because of irrational bitterness and frustration. His attitude is condescending, he "understands" how unemployment or hard circumstances can make people cling to these things which are apparently supposed to be so clearly negative.

I'm not prone to quote Hillary Clinton in support of political ideas, but she got it right on this one
