hi-

just thought i'd check in and let you all know
how i was progressing with my problem with
'things' using up my resources.

we finally isolated 'services.exe' which was
running literally hundreds of programs - spyware
- even took over my windows media player. eventually
my friend was able to delete it by rebooting in dos mode
and deleting the recycle file that way. it just
wouldn't allow him to delete otherwise. it's been
a long arduous process and i'm thinking i'll ask him
if he would care to post how he managed to track
down the culprit. he would have to do so on my
computer though because he does not subscribe to
s.i.

thanks for your help. the article you linked
to me started him off.
