As far as ME political balance, I look at it as Maliki vs. Saddam.

Saddam was a secularist... a fighter of the "violent islam" you talk about in the next paragraph. An enemy of Iran, which could be the only real serious threat in the ME.

Malaki on the other hand is very much a friend of Iran. He at the least tolerates the Shiite factions... and when we are out of the way will exclude and/or persecute the Sunnis. And most of our ME allies are Sunni. Lot's of moving parts and admittedly difficult to simplify.

When you try to minimize the risk of violent islam, you completely lose me. Violent Islam has been the biggest threat to the world for almost 1500 years. And it will continue to be so.

Totally wrong. It's hard to argue against something so totally fictional.
