SW, I would advise the latter option. The $500 machines will be more than sufficient to surf the net and write a paper. Also, if he hasn't used computers before, he can spend a few months figuring out what he likes and doesn't like about PC use, how sensitive he is to performance, what kinds of features he misses/might want, etc.--all invaluable information that will serve him in good stead when he makes his later more permanent decision. Does he have the WP software he needs already? Does he have a monitor? The one area it might make sense to spend some $ on up front would be a decent 17" monitor, now that they are dirt cheap.
