Pakistan-based spokesman for Harakat Jehad-i-Islami told AFP the 85 were killed when US warplanes bombed a defence line at Darae Noor in the Dara-i-Souf valley in the northern Afghan province of Balkh. ‘Our fighters were on a defence line at Darae Noor, close to Dara-i-Souf and the Northern Alliance had failed to break the line in the past week,’ the spokesman said. ‘They tipped off our positions to the Americans and their planes bombarded the area early this (Thursday) morning. ‘Eighty-five of our fighters were martyred in the raid. Their bodies have been sent to Mazar-i-Sharif. Our commander, Qari Abu Mohammed Ashraf, was also martyred in the raid. They are all Pakistanis.’
