If you go back 300 years, to the mini ice age that corresponds to the maunder minimum and compare it to 1998's temperature, you can show a much more dramatic increase in temperature.

If you go back 11 years, there is a pretty dramatic decrease in temperature. If you go back 3500 years, we are in a pretty clear cooling trend with lower highs and lower lows.

2008 was .2C lower than the norm.
