I think that you have hit on the important factor: secular bear market. In an uptrending market(the 90's) many trading methods and even "buy and hold" worked very well. It is much more difficult to trade successfully in a secular bear market, unless you take the opposite tack, and adopt a shorting approach. No doubt you could have made money shorting the "holdrs" for example. It is even more difficult to trade successfully in a non-trending market. Problem is that the rallies, and declines are abrupt and sudden, and timing these properly is difficult.
