I missed most of this conversation, but for those experiencing unexpected on/off/standby status changes with their computers and monitors, one place to look is the Control Panel/Power Options. Another would be the Control Panel/Network Connections and check the configuration on the enabled and connected network adapters. They can be set to wake up the computer if there is activity.

Wake-up options often exist for other devices such as modems and other peripherals. More often than not, the unexpected behavior turns out to be exactly what was supposed to happen based on various device configuration settings.
