Legato Systems Embraces the NDMP Standard: Legato Networker Software to be NDMP Compliant in Q3 Legato Systems Strongly Endorses the Industry Standard for Emerging Storage Area Networks Market as well as Existing Network Attached Storage Market PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 1999-- Legato Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:LGTO - news), a leader in the enterprise storage management software market, today announced accelerated plans for compliance with the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) for Legato NetWorker. The open standard for Storage Area Networks (SANs) and Network Attached Storage (NAS), NDMP compliance will bring further flexibility to Legato customers using Legato NetWorker. The NDMP standard simplifies network data management by centralizing backup control, reducing network traffic, and enhancing backup performance.
''We are pleased to provide a very strong endorsement of NDMP, since NDMP enables solutions that are technically elegant, efficient, and LAN-free,'' said Nora M. Denzel, senior vice president at Legato Systems, Inc. ''Pending approval of the proposed merger between Intelliguard and Legato, this open protocol will power Legato NetWorker solutions as early as Q3, immediately providing our customers with the needed flexibility to protect and manage their corporate data assets.''
Using the NDMP standard, each network-attached storage device comes with a 'universal agent' that can be used by any NDMP-compliant backup administration application. For customers, NDMP will ensure interoperability between different file servers and backup solutions, significantly simplifying the data management process. And by making every network attached storage device backup-ready, NDMP will enable true plug-and-play operation. This means Legato NetWorker users will not be required to install any additional software on an NDMP-compliant network storage device. The NDMP protocol was co-developed by Intelliguard Software and Network Appliance (Nasdaq:NTAP - news).
''Legato's endorsement of NDMP will increase its acceptance among industry leaders as an open approach to building enterprise storage networking and backup solutions using NAS and SAN technology,'' said Dan Warmenhoven, president and chief executive officer of Network Appliance. ''We look forward to working with Legato and other partners to implement NDMP-based standards for our customers' data management needs.''
''With NDMP's intelligent, open-standards approach, end-users can take full advantage of the latest in SAN architecture, while protecting their investment in their existing data management solution,'' said George Wilson, chief executive officer at Intelliguard Software. ''With this endorsement, Legato sends a clear message that the future is wide open.''
On January, 28, 1999, Legato announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Intelliguard Software, Inc. Intelliguard is the developer of the revolutionary Celestra(TM) architecture, which provides the industry's first true 'server-less' backup for the SAN market. The combination of the two companies will propel Legato into the leadership position in both the SAN marketplace and open standards arena.
Legato intends to embrace and continue the leadership provided by Intelliguard for the NDMP standard. Vendors that have already endorsed the NDMP protocol include EMC (NYSE:EMC - news), StorageTek (NYSE:STK - news), Network Appliance (NASDAQ:NTAP - news), and Veritas (NASDAQ:VRTS - news).
