If the high-end database market is slowing, and more and more companies are going with MS SQL server, ORCL may have problems growing at a rate that would support its high PE.

I have friends who work at ORCL who have commented that SQL server is stiff competition because of its low price. They complain that ORCL is such a better product, people will end up paying in the long run, ect.

My response to them is that there are a lot more Camry's sold than Lexis. Price has become a relevant factor for many companies. As SQL server's performance improves(clearly it is not equal to ORCL v*), ORCL will come under more and more pressure from mid-size companies.

I am not saying that this company is dead, just that it is facing more competition than it has in a long time.

A positive is ORCL is attacking vertical markets. I just don't know how quickly this approach can make up for slowing core database sales.
