ADVISORY/Lifestream Technologies Launches First Integration of Medical Data From Diagnostic Test Kit, to Smart Card, to Internet

ÿ (BW HealthWire)--The future of the Internet -- and the way consumers use it -- is here today in the form of an innovative system involving encryption-based Smart Cards. This patented product by Lifestream Technologies (OTCBB:LFST - news) will be featured in conjunction with Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) later this month, as a revolutionary example of the way people will use the Internet in their everyday lives.

The first product available to utilize this ``next generation' technology is the Lifestream Cholesterol Monitor -- a hand-held test kit embedded with a Smart Card reader. Recently FDA-cleared for healthcare providers, the company is positioning to make the testing system available to the general public in the third quarter of this year. For the first time, consumers will be able to measure their cholesterol, and have their own secure ``access key' and control of their personal medical records via the Internet. They can regulate whom to give access to their personal records, such as their doctor or pharmacist, and what information those people may retrieve.

Lifestream Technologies and Microsoft will present this revolutionary system at the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference, April 10-14, in Dallas (booth No. 1832), and at the National Managed Health Care Conference (NMHCC), April 16-19, in Atlanta (booths No. 117 and No. 1767). Lifestream will demonstrate how healthcare professionals and individuals will be able to take more control in preventing onset of disease and in managing their personal and confidential medical records online.

``These two events are the perfect forum to present our groundbreaking technology,' said Christopher Maus, chairman and CEO of Lifestream. ``Lifestream's technology will change the way we all access the data in our lives, with far-reaching applications throughout the medical industry as well as other industries. Our unique system holds the key for successful integration of data management, combined with accessibility and security -- the most critical issues facing the healthcare industry.'

``Lifestream Technologies offers today a clear and working example of how we believe companies and consumers will use the Internet in the future,' said Microsoft's Mike Dusche, product manager, Windows for Smart Cards.

The Lifestream Cholesterol Monitor is a hand-held device that can test total cholesterol, inexpensively and with laboratory accuracy, in just three minutes using merely one drop of blood. In a seamless integration of technology, the data is downloaded from the testing device to a Smart Card and transferred over the Internet to a closed encrypted web site via proprietary software, Privalink(tm). Within minutes, physicians and pharmacists are provided with patients' cholesterol data and risk profiles for heart disease, and they can merge the Smart Card data with the latest scientific literature to create a ``personal Health Evaluation Program' for each patient. Cholesterol testing and evaluations typically require fasting, drawing blood and waiting days for results.

Lifestream Technologies is an Internet-based healthcare company that links Internet information services to medical diagnostic products through encryption-based ``Smart Cards' to aid in the prevention, monitoring and control of disease. Founded in 1992, Lifestream's vision is centered on supporting government and industry initiatives for the prevention and control of disease.

Opnion:
-ÿ This announcement is a watershed event for LifeStream, in that MicroSoft has invited LifeStream to present its SmartCard technology under the auspices of MicroSoft at its pavilion at these two major medical conferences.
-ÿ LifeStream patent pending SmartCard technology may infact emerg as the infrastructure technology for SmartCard applications over the internet.ÿ MicroSoft's acknowledgement and support would be fundamental to this process.
