Re: NN vs. ASND:

Let's wish them both well. My portfolio roots for ASND to be stronger.

My portfolio has more on NN than ASND, but that's a moving target, and based on my being more familiar with MainStreetXpress than with Ascend's products.

Today's announcement from TXN has ramifications few acknowledge. Their C6x-based ADSL chips are now available, meaning they're out the gate before ADI and ALA with the full 8Mbps solution --- and at prices that will allow modems to be sold under $200. Back in September I spoke with Tom Engibous at the DSP conference in San Diego and he told me then their goal was 50/200 --- meaning $50 Internet fee and $200 for modems. Until they could reach those price points, the technology wouldn't fly. Now, of course, it remains to be seen what telcos and ISPs will charge for 8Mbps hook-ups.

As for TI's ADSL chips, I'd expect some major telco announcements now that companies like Siemens and Ericsson and Efficient Networks (private) and (dare I say it) COMS have the chip they need (controversial b/c they've gone back and forth between ADI and TI for a long time). Even Westell is building products based on the C6X.

What does this mean for Ascend? With ADSL speeds moving from fantasy to reality, telcos will be pressured into building out their infrastructures to meet new demands. The long stall may be over.

Just another opinion.
