I think many people are working on AI specifically. My young friend who is studying AI at Harvard (got in at 16 I think) told me several years ago AI was much more advanced than people thought. One of the books he recommended to me is "Brainchildren" essays on designing Minds" by Daniel c. Dennett. I think I paid $100 for it.
